Star Apple Plant

Description

Scientific Name:"Chrysophyllum cainito". Also known as a Golden Leaf Tree due to the sharp contrast of colors between the deep glossy green top and the silky golden yellow bottoms of the leaves. Full size trees have been recorded growing as high as 100 feet tall with short trunks growing to 3 feet wide. Inconspicuous tiny purplish-white flowers bloom with a delicate sweet fragrance. Ornate round rubbery skinned fruit are produced around year 7 and ripen to a regal purple. While the skin is not edible the interior flesh is soft and sweet and has a distinct asterisk star shape when cut cross section. Star apple best adapted to hot, lowland tropical climates but will grow in warm, protected locations in south Florida.
